Earth Day, recognised annually on the 22nd of April, aims to encourage greater support and awareness of the importance of environmental protection. Eager to play a part in making a positive impact on the environment, idsMED Singapore engaged in an upcycling craft activity organised by the HR Team. In preparation for the activity, the participants were asked to bring some old clothes and fabrics from home.
As always, the session commenced with a complimentary bento set lunch for the participants who gathered at the idsMED Learning Academy, where they could engage in fun and meaningful conversations with colleagues.
The group subsequently moved to the main activity where HR Executive, Mr. Jeremiah Ng, demonstrated and taught the participants how to make fabric coasters. Everyone took out the various fabrics they brought, which included cleaning rags, button-up shirts, t-shirts, and scarves. As there were fabrics of different colours and patterns, participants decided to share and exchange fabrics with one another to have some variety in their coaster designs.
Everyone was seen giving their best efforts into cutting, weaving, and braiding their respective fabrics into shape. Some participants even decided to work in pairs for greater efficiency, which transformed the session into a fun bonding activity. It was truly satisfying to see how the finished coasters turned out with the mix of colours and patterns.
The final products were then submitted to the HR Team for safekeeping as they are to be donated to Sengkang General Hospital (SKH) for their fundraising “Kindness Initiative”. These handmade fabric coasters will be sold at the hospital’s Kindness Kart, where the funds received will be used to financially support stateless patients in need.
The HR Team deserves praise for their constant efforts in encouraging employees towards more purposeful living. This fabric coaster activity commemorated Earth Day and also served as a platform for the participants to give back to the community – it was truly a meaningful afternoon.
