In 1987, a group of prominent businessmen in the State of Penang conceived the idea of establishing the island’s first private hospital. In 1989, the majority control of the company was taken over by Gleneagles International (S) Pte Ltd.

In 2010, the management of Gleneagles planned an upgrade extension exercise to cater for the ever growing patient admittance. This latest development included 10 new operating theatres with two digital operating rooms for minimally invasive surgery, outpatient department with 80 consultation suites, and additional beds with higher capacity for single rooms.

UKM Medical Centre (formerly known as Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia) is one of the four university hospitals in Malaysia. It is located in Kuala Lumpur and is administered by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The construction of University Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre HUKM completed in May 1997 and officially opened on 14 July 1997.
