On August 6, idsMED and Medtronic organized the workshop "Screening for congenital heart defect by non-invasive method" at Bac Ha International General Hospital. Participating in the workshop, nearly 30 doctors and nurses at the hospital learned about early screening of congenital heart disease for children.
According to Lancet Child Adolesc Health 2020, for every 100,000 babies born, 131 children die of congenital heart disease globally. Meanwhile, the rate of congenital heart disease in children ranges from 0.7% -0.8%. Therefore, the congenital heart screening for the baby is very necessary.
Screening of the congenital heart for children with the SpO2 measurement method (measuring oxygen saturation through the skin) has outstanding advantages:
- No pain
- Non-invasive
- Low cost
In addition, the workshop also emphasizes that the SpO2 method should be best implemented within 24-48 hours postpartum. Earlier testing may give false positive results due to the transition from fetal circulation to neonatal circulation and instability of systemic circulating oxygen saturation. Later screening will lose the chance to intervene (if possible) before the ductus closes.
